Week 2: Burg at Oak Hill
This Time it's Different.
These two teams
have only met on the gridiron one time in the
last 30 years. That matchup occurred in
2005 at Wheelersburg Ed Miller Stadium and
The Pirates rolled off 34 points in the first
half. The Burg then sent out the backups
for the remainder of the game to finish off a
34-13 victory. . The 2005 game was
scheduled only because neither team could find a
satisfactory week ten opponent. As the
previous 30 years suggested, Wheelersburg did
not want to schedule Oak Hill due to the lack of
playoff point production, and Oak Hill had not
quite developed their program into a solid
competitor in Ohio Division 5. Therefore,
the teams agreed to only a one year deal to fill
their schedules. Oak Hill ended up 0-10 on
the season, and Wheelersburg had claimed a
playoff spot before the game was even played.
You could almost say that the game was
meaningless.
As the title of the article suggests, this
time it's different. To say that Oak Hill
has now developed their program into a
competitor would be a tremendous understatement,
and to think that Oak Hill will lack in playoff
point production these days is just downright
ludicrous. This time around it's not about
filling a schedule. These teams want
to play each other this year.
Oak Hill enters the contest at 1-0 coming off of
a 35-7 victory over Chesapeake. The Oaks
also enter the game boasting a #3 AP ranking in
Ohio Division 5. Oak Hill returns 17
starters from a team that finished the 2009
regular season undefeated and ranked #2 in
region 19 ahead of all SOC2 foes including
Minford and Wheelersburg.
This
time around, Wheelersburg travels to Oak Hill as
the perceived underdog. It's too early in
the season to truly have any idea how this game
might turn out, but with certainty the outcome's
effects will be felt as playoff time approaches.
Doesn't sound anything like last time does
it? Nope.
Meaningless? Child

The Oaks will
no doubt be aiming to stop Brandon Schankweiler
as he enters the game against Oak Hill with
3,416 career all-purpose yards and 40 career
TDs. Will Schankweiler's production be enough
to keep up with Oak Hill's high powered
offense? We'll find out Friday. |
