9-08-09 Question: Burgfan

Can the fans expect to see more of Schankweiler at QB?

He is getting a lot of attention for his grace under pressure and his passing game.  One site quoted he moved the team 95 yards in 2 minutes in the Ironton game to set up the only score. Regardless of the accuracy of this quote, it does seem reasonable to use Shank at QB in building a strong program for next year.  Tyler Lang is a very strong player in other positions. What are your thoughts on this?  Thank you for your response.

From a long time Burg fan.

Answer: Coach Woodward

Our plan as a coaching staff is to utilize our players in best positions that we feel benefit the team.  We have evaluated the players since June on the football field and have made moves to certain positions based on performance as seen throughout the summer and the first few games.  We stand by our decisions as a staff and focus on what we feel is best for the 2009 season.  Both individuals who have seen time at the QB position are gifted athletes and both have attributes which can benefit the team on any given play.  As a staff we make every effort to zero in on those skills for production in our offense.  Through the course of a game situations allow for those skills to be tapped into and used in different situations.  We as a staff continue to use the two individuals in our offense game plan where and when we feel they can best benefit our offensive production as a team.

8-20-09 Question:  Burgfan

Seems like we have had pretty good success against Ironton recently. What is your game plan for this year? I know you don't want a repeat of last year, losing your starting QB early in the game.

Answer:  Coach Woodward

Ironton as always will be Big, Strong, and Fast.  We must maintain offensive possession, limit costly mistakes, big plays, turnovers, and take care of the little things within the game the big picture will fall into place.  Our goal is to be as strong, conditioned, and  fundamentally sound on August 28th as we can be to have a chance to be successful.

8-16-09 Question:  Burgfan

Coach, do you see anything being done soon about the condition of the home-side bleachers at the stadium?  It seems that the focus has been on getting new field turf when the field appears to be in fine shape when compared to the home-stands.  Are there any plans or do you have any thoughts?  Thank you.

JS

Answer:  Coach Woodward

The administration at Wheelersburg is aware of the need for updated facilities and is currently in the process of prioritizing some of those updates to best utilize and maximize what is currently in place.  At the same time they understand that some considerable donations have been made to specifically "The TURF Fund" and we must honor those patrons contributions.  I have been solely concerned with the 2009 football season, but have expressed my concerns about facilities when asked.  I trust that whatever updates to athletic facilities that are made in the future will be thoughtfully administered.

8-15-09 Question:  Burgfan

Hey Coach, I'm looking forward to the season.  I've seen us line up in a so-called "Pistol" formation.  Why is this necessary and what advantage might it give you as a team?  GO BURG!!!

Answer:  Coach Woodward

Well as we go into the season with two possible players who can play the QB position and really a number of players who can move well in space, we thought that we could expand our possibilities, cover as much ground as possible with as much misdirection as possible from this set.  It allows us to do some things with the players we have to capitalize on their talents.  We are still trying to work out the kinks but we hope it can be effective.

11/03/08 Question:  Burgfan

Hey coach great game, I was listening to the game from down here in South Carolina and the D sounded great, the only thing is on the offense it sounded like the quarter back should have thrown the ball away or the line needed to stay on their blocks a little longer. will you be working this week on these things?

Good luck next week Pirates!

Answer:  Coach Woodward

Thanks..... the kids appreciate your support they played a very physical, intense game. We continually try to take what the opposing defense gives us and make things as simple for players as possible...... we are continually working and learning what are the best decisions to make when faced with receivers being covered or pressure from up front.  Each week is a learning experience and we look to correct those mistakes and not make the same ones hopefully the next week.  Line protection is improving, routes are improving, decisions are improving.  Keep tuning in down there in South Carolina and we will make every effort to provide you with a game you can listen to the next week.  Wheelersburg is a great place to teach and coach and it is great to see a fan base spread far and wide.  Tune into my teacher webpage and click on the 99.3 link to listen to the games over the computer.

10/26/08 Question:  Burgfan

Coach, it seemed that instead of running the same plays by the same people after the first half of the West game some adjustments would have been made.  What's up?

Answer:  Coach Woodward

We made mistakes, we will learn from them, and we'll benefit from what we have learned and work to move forward.

10/10/08 Question:  Burgfan

Is there any chance you might open up the offense a little more and give #7 a little more passing experience heading into the playoffs?  Past experiences have shown that you may have to commit to the pass more than you like.

Answer:  Coach Woodward

The main goal of any contest is to place the individuals on your team in the best position for them to succeed on any and every play.  Each and every team, and situation, brings a new challenge each week. We continue to practice week in and week out on every possible play that can allow us to succeed in every possible situation.  When a situation arises, myself and the other coaches will determine the best play that gives our team the best chance to succeed against that team on that night.  I hope with this approach, the outcomes will continue to be the same and allow us to make the playoffs.  If that happens, we will worry about that game when it comes.

08/04/08 Question:  Burgfan

Coach Woodward, how do you feel about going head-to-head against an Ohio High School coaching legend in your very first game as Head Ball Coach?

Answer:  Coach Woodward

What better way to experience the dream of becoming a head coach than doing it against someone who has established himself as an icon in the profession.  I have learned a lot in the past five years, I hope to continue to learn in the August 22 7:30 kickoff at Ed Miller Stadium.

 08/04/08 Question:  Burgfan

Glad to have you Coach Woodward.  Will you be keeping the helmet awards?

Answer:  Coach Woodward

We are looking into continuing the helmet awards for this fall.  Myself and the rest of the Coaching staff feel that have been positive over the past few years.  The Seniors will ultimately make the decision.  It is their team, which I am allowing them to make the decisions in regards to what they want.

08/04/2008 Question:  Burgfan

First of all, Welcome Coach Woodward and good luck on the upcoming season. My question is the QB position. Do you think that you might use a 2 QB system this year?  It looks like you have a lot of good young talent this year at the skilled positions.

Answer:  Coach Woodward

We are currently assessing the players we have at the skilled positions and and trying to find where each individual can reach their full potential at benefiting the team goals.  Our QBs are as talented as our running backs so we want them all to have an chance to contribute offensively.

4/30/2008 Question:  Burgfan

Coach Woodward, what is your opinion on the Wheelersburg non-school
affiliated special traveling youth football organization that is being
formed for 5-6 grade? (aka "The Outlaws")

 Answer:  Coach Woodward

Well nothing welcomes in an individual into a new position like a chance to respond publicly to a topic that is of the up most importance to a program and its young people.  There is no other place that I would rather respond to just such an issue…that way once my views have been posted, there will be no room for discrepancy.   With that being said, I will make the best effort to clearly express my opinions in regards to your question.

It has been my honor and privilege to be a member of the Wheelersburg community for the past five years.  In that time I learned many things that I have added to my archives in regards to building a successful program, and creating positive community involvement.

One of those things is being prepared and open to any color which individuals may have adopted as their school colors.  The most orange that I had ever seen prior to coming to Wheelersburg was during the week of Deer season.  My home is now decorated in Orange and Black….. as well as my wife and I having a complete wardrobe of Orange and Black apparel.  My daughter, Grace, is slowly acquiring her own Pirate outfits.

But more than anything else I know I am not alone when I say that Wheelersburg activities have developed a reputation that speaks for itself.  The acclamations achieved by the community over the years, at every level have been unmatched in the Southeastern Ohio area.  Sure other communities have achieved well deserved success, but not on the continuous level that has been displayed in the BURG.  Now I am a product of Southeastern Ohio who is very proud of the environment I grew up in.  Yet as an educator and coach, I have taken a step back to assess the differences in the BURG and other communities and taken note so that we may continue the tradition and success.

What continually stands out in my mind are the values, visions, and atmosphere used to mold young people in the BURG.  That atmosphere is a positive, goal oriented environment, where success is not based on winning and losing…….not based on who beat who….. what community…….. what athletes.  It is by no means a perfect little section on a map where every person is perfect……. we all know there are individuals who beat to a different drum…… and I am slowly learning just who they are.  But as a whole, SUCCESS in BURG has been based on young student athletes, learning to work together, learning they have many opportunities to find their own individual success if they apply themselves and WORK to achieve a goal. aka “ PIRATE PRIDE

Granted when athletes reach the high school level, winning, and being victorious in a contest becomes more of a priority, as a Head Coach I better know and understand that or I will not be in this position for long.  But in the development of young people, prior to their years in high school, what is really our ultimate goal.

Wheelersburg has a Peewee program in place which allows every individual an equal opportunity to be part of a team.  It allows for more individuals a chance to play a variety of positions.  It pushes kids to WORK hard, together, with each having a chance to develop in the same program.  It builds confidence in young people, comradery, team unity, peer tutoring, sportsmanship, team moral/spirit, consistency, a love of the game, a chance to learn from others,  just like they will experience in the future at the high school level.  It allows for control over the experience that those young people are receiving.

With that all being said I am not in favor of our young people changing their course of development here at the BURG.  Athletes have participated in many various sports as they have grown up…..many of whom who have waited for the day when they will reach the fifth grade and have an opportunity the be drafted, lace up there shoulder pads, figure out which pad goes in which slot of the pants……which slot the belt goes through and what order one must follow to get it right…….and make them comfortable enough to run as fast as they can, and jump as high as possible.  I remember those days.

I am well aware that some individuals have had the opportunity to do this as third and fourth graders.  While I am in favor of children being exposed to a football at this young of an age, the only equipment I feel they should have is flags around their waists.  But I am not a liberty to make all of those decisions.  I am not at liberty to make decisions for all young people who are fifth and sixth graders.  I am only offering my opinion and recommendation that young people remain within the Peewee program developed here at the burg, by individuals who at the time created a program to benefit all BURG athletes in a way to instruct those individuals about……. POSITIVE PIRATE PRIDE.

It is not in my interest to have athletes participating in two football contests on the same day.  Even when I was a fifth grader and participated in a game, I was physically spent when I walked off of the field after four quarters……not to mention bruised up and sore.  Safety of young people is the number one priority.  As adults we must guide young people in this direction.

Are there some things that can be improved in the Peewee program?  By all means yes.  Each year we need to be open to ways of improving our young people’s experience.  At the same time we can not lose sight of what has built the reputation of the BURG as a whole.  Many programs throughout the area have and or are trying to mock our same type of program development. This I know……. But I ask the questions ….Why change? Who really stands to benefit?  All Kids? Individuals?  Parents?????? Pirates???? Outlaws????? Wheelersburg???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I wish all the success in the world to any Wheelersburg student/athlete who competes in any sport…. or academic contest……. at any level.  I have acquired the Head Football coaching position, and I have an opportunity to help develop, guide, administer, police, coach young people in the sport of Football.  I will try to make the best decisions I can for the advancement of the Wheelersburg Football program at all levels. I will ensure that all individuals working with the student/ athletes in the football program are aware of and share the same goals and visions.

Assuming that parents are the main readers of this post, I hope that the Wheelersburg Football Program continues to have the opportunity to work with your student / athletes.  Anything that is done by players above and beyond the peewee program is on their own.

6/26/2007 Question:  Burgfan

If we ever do change are stadium do you think you guys will keep the team under the stadium to run out like always or will there be changes to that and maybe make them run out of an end zone?

Answer:  Coach Lewis

In terms of a new stadium design, I think we would want to visit various high school stadiums to get as many ideas as we could. I personally like coming out onto the field from underneath the stadium. There's nothing quite like hearing the crowd above you as you prepare to take to field. However, obviously it behooves us to explore all options and pick the best for our particular situation.

2/22/2007 Question:  Burgfan

Do we know what region/division we will be playing in in 2007? I read that Amanda Clearcreek will be moving up to Division 4.  Do you know if there is any truth to this?

Answer:  Coach Lewis

In terms of our division and/or our region, the OHSAA has not made those assignments for next year at this point. As far as Amanda Clearcreek moving to Div. IV, that would be pure speculation on my part. Hopefully the OHSAA will make their decision about divisions/regions in the next couple of months.

2/12/2007 Question:  Burgfan

To Coach Lewis:

I was just wondering when the 07 schedule will be completed and what teams we are looking at to fill the week 4 open date.  Also I was wondering how the turf project is going, and could it be installed by start of the 2007 season?

Answer:  Coach Lewis

The 2007 schedule has not been completed as of 2/12/2007. We currently have game four open. We are currently in discussions with Steubenville Central Catholic. Hopefully we will know something by the end of this month. As far as the turf project, we are currently contacting big donors and will then go to the general public. Our hope is to raise the money by March 15th. We must raise $600,000 by this time or we will not be able to install it this year. At the very worst, we would like to have the turf installed by the beginning of the 2008 season.

9/28/2006 Question:  Burgfan

This question is for Coach Lewis.

I know Wheelersburg is known for its strength of schedule, but why can't we take Ironton off our schedule? We have not beaten them since 1999 and they are about the only team in the area that we have a losing record against. (I believe it is 3-13). I realize it is a big challenge to the school, but I think we should try to start the season with another school. I believe it is a little disheartening to the kids to start the season 0-1 year after year.  I am not taking anything away from the kids. Year after Year they have bounced back and had successful seasons. I just think maybe we should try somebody else. Your thoughts!

Answer:  Coach Lewis

Here goes my best answer:

I understand your concerns about losing to Ironton. We are not happy about losing to Ironton or anyone else on our schedule. We as a staff and program go into every game expecting to win. This is no different when it comes to Ironton. I think if you look back at the last 5 years with Ironton, there have been numerous times that we had our chances to win and just didn't get the job done! To drop Ironton would be somewhat of a defeatist attitude. We (our players and staff) expect and look forward to playing a challenging schedule every year. Isn't that what athletics is all about? Competing against the best and measuring how you stack up! I understand where you're coming from, but I also believe that "we will" get over this hump and get rid of that big monkey on our back that has an "I" on it's helmet.

9/18/2006 Question: Burgfan

Do you think we will get a new football stadium?

Answer: Coach Tony Lewis

We would love to have a new stadium. Our stadium side is probably structurally sound for another 8-10 years. After this point, we will probably have to have something done. I am hopeful that our school board and administration are considering a future need for stadium renovation. Our football staff will make sure our thoughts on this subject are heard after the current football season ends.

9/18/2006 Question: Burgfan

Why aren't the boys taught to tackle around the legs? This guarantees the carrier will be stopped. I noticed when the boys tried shoulder and shirt tackles Portsmouth drug them for 5 or 6 Yards.

Answer:  Coach Tony Lewis

Our players are taught the correct way to tackle. It is sometimes hard to simulate the correct technique without getting players hurt, but we have a tackling circuit every Wednesday in which players are taught the correct way to tackle.

8/30/2006 Question: Burgfan

How do you grade a game film?

Answer:  Coach Tony Lewis

Our staff takes the game film home on Friday night and grades it as an entire staff. Each staff member is assigned a specific position to grade during the film and each member of a particular unit is given a plus or a minus based on them carrying out their particular assignment. These grades are then averaged at the end of the film to give the particular player an overall % for his performance. We take a lot of time to evaluate each position after each ballgame. On a side note, practice film is also sometimes used to evaluate each position.

8/29/2006 Question: Burgfan

It looks like our defensive scheme has changed this year. We've always had a good defense, why would we make changes to that?

Answer: Coach Tony Lewis

We have tweaked our defensive scheme to address some concerns we had as a staff after looking back over the last three years. Our overall defensive scheme has not changed that much and I think you will see us playing "great Pirate defense" in the very near future. In conclusion, we have always prided ourselves on the fact that we play great defense. I don't foresee this changing this year.

6/20/2006 Question: Burgfan

This question is for Coach Tony Lewis: I was wondering if you could explain your playing and coaching career prior to coming to WHS? What brought you to Wheelersburg and What is your feeling about Pirate football after your 4 years of coaching here?

Answer: Coach Tony Lewis

My playing career involved playing high school football, baseball and basketball at South Putnam High School in Indiana. I was a quarterback in high school and went on to play one year at Ohio Northern University. My college career ended when I tore a muscle in my throwing shoulder.

I started my football coaching career my senior year in college when my old high school coach asked me to volunteer coach at Pike High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. While I was coaching, I was also doing my student teaching under the Social Studies Department Head. I then went to Evansville, IN two years later to coach again under my old head football coach. I coached football in Evansville for 10 years and was also a coach in girl's track and girl's softball.

In terms of what brought me to Wheelersburg, it is really a long story. Basically, my wife and I decided that it was a good time for me to go for a head coaching position. I applied to several schools, and Wheelersburg was one of the schools that granted me an interview.

I believe that Wheelersburg Football is very special. This school and community takes a lot of pride in their football program, just like the school I coached at in Evansville (Evansville Reitz). My family and I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Wheelersburg family and we hope to continue to uphold the great tradition of Wheelersburg Football. Go Pirates!!!

Question: Burgfan

I was wondering how the existing weight room at the high school was put together and what was involved to get that done?

Answer:  Coach Tony Lewis

The current weight room was equipped and painted in the summer of 2002. The equipment and rubber flooring was purchased with money that was raised through a community/school fundraiser. Because of community and fan support, we were able to raise $20,000. All of our athletic teams and our general student population has benefited by the weight room renovation. A special thanks goes out to John Eaton and Amanda Eaton. John was the superintendent at the time of the fundraiser and he was instrumental in gathering community support for this project. Amanda designed the drawing that was used at the big kick-off event to start the fundraiser. Her drawing showed what our weight room would look like if we raised the required money. Because of people like them and other devoted "Burg Backers" in our community, our weight room was updated..
